Dear Student:
At the request of several of our clients and based on student feedback, all courses for the coming semester will be delivered in Flash format. As those students enrolled last semester may recall, the Flash option was offered on a selection of courses. Expanding this format to all courses will allow us to release lectures more quickly, as well as provide access to these lectures across a wider range of computing environments. Since lectures delivered in Flash format are viewable with your internet browser, they do not require the use of a separate media player (e.g. RealPlayer, Windows Media Player). Minimum viewing requirements as well as a link to download the free Flash plug-in can be found at the end of this message.
We will also debut a new video delivery format that uses Windows Media Player. This new format will require that you to use Windows Media Player v.7.1 or newer (as of this message, the current version is v.10) in addition to the technical requirements listed below. As a result, we will not produce RealPlayer compatible content. If you do not have Windows Media player, it can be downloaded for free from the link provided below.
Lecture Viewing Requirements:
- Pentium III or equivalent processor
- 256 MBs of RAM
- 2GB free disk space
- VGA monitor capable of 1024X768 resolution
- Sound card and speakers
- Internet Connection (High Speed connection highly recommended e.g. cable modem or DSL)
- Internet Explorer 5.0 or equivalent browser (IE 6 or later recommended)
- Flash Player Plugin 6.0
or later (Flash 8 or later recommended)
Additional requirements for Windows Media video option:
- Windows Media Player
7.1 or later (WMP 9 or later recommended)
- Internet Explorer 5.0 (IE 6 or later recommended) with Active X and JavaScript enabled (Note: Windows Media presentations will not play in other browsers e.g. Netscape, Mozilla, Opera)
- Windows 2000 or later Operating System (XP recommended)
While much effort has been put into making the course lectures as accessible as possible, some presentations may not be viewable from within a corporate firewall. If you encounter difficulty viewing a lecture, contact meonline@umich.edu.
After reviewing the Lecture Viewing Requirements, we encourage you to test an example of each format prior to the beginning of the semester:
It is our hope that this transition will be a smooth one, but if you do encounter any difficulties or have any questions, please contact us at: meonline@umich.edu
Thanks,
The MEonline Team
